This poem is hard to hear
what with the deep-sea sounds
of military jets the ubiquitous
orange-eyed pounding
at the drop forge the city buses
firing through underground passages
until they feel massed cetaceous nuclear

so you might miss the denture’s
three quick clicks
then the widow in peach housecoat
continuing to sweep the porch steps
one by one by one
