MAGAZINES



Business Magazines

Advertising Age -- This site is subtitled "It's All About Marketing" -- which pretty well sums it up. The Age features daily updates and sections on Interactive Media and Marketing, among others.

Business Week -- This site presents a sampling of articles from each week's magazine, as well as a preview of next week's magazine before it hits the news stands. Online chats about business and Business Week RadioNet are added features.

The Economist -- Features the current issue of this international economics, news, politics and business magazine. Not all articles in the "atom" edition are online, but there is a search tool, reviews of books and results of surveys. Worth checking out.

Money -- This site, helped along by Pathfinder, has several interesting features, including a way to calculate your return on investment and where to find the best loan rates. Also, Money Daily provides current news and financial information.

Business Ethics Magazine -- This publication, based in Minneapolis, discusses the ethical problems and possibilities of 20th-century business.

Forbes -- Here, the magazine that trademarked the phrase "capitalist tool" can be found online. Current and archived issues, a mutual fund report card and more. Don't miss: "The Death of the Internet."

Fortune -- Some information from the magazine is hosted online, as well as a "Pacific Rim Special" and an "Investor's Guide 1996."

Hispanic Business -- The "official" site of Hispanic business. This site hosts daily news and information from the Chicano and Latino business community. Also, research services and special events.

 

Computer Magazines

BYTE -- This site is BYTE magazine's Web presence. Besides the monthly cover story, check out the virtual Press Room where you can review archived press releases submitted to BYTE. You can also download the BYTEmark program to conduct benchmark tests on your PC and see how it matches up with the newest technology. New: A java version of BYTEmark.

Computer Gaming World -- This magazine is all about games, which everyone knows you shouldn't have on your computer, as the computer is a very important business tool, and you should never run anything more fun than a spreadsheet and . . . is the boss gone yet? Not only does this site review games, it gives you tips, tricks, and ways to cheat.

Computer Life -- Games, art and digital cameras to take on vacation -- this site's about making the computer a part of the family.

Dr. Dobbs Journal -- The latest information on software programs and programming from a magazine that's been in existance for over 20 years. From articles to examples of programming code; from the Dr. Dobb's Source Book to the Dr. Dobb's CD-ROM, this sight has it all for programmers and programmer-hopefuls. It even includes a section on job opportunities.

FamilyPC On The Web -- This site specializes in projects parents and kids can work on together. Design your own web site or check out reviews of educational software -- this site is for parents and kids alike.

HomePC -- HomePC is a good place to go if you're new to home computing and want to learn the basics. It includes a column called Ask Dr. PC and features game reviews. The site is Java enhanced, so make sure you're using Netscape 2.0 or Internet Explorer.

Information Week Online -- This publication is aimed at computer professionals -- so it should be perfect for your kids, even if their parents don't understand it.

Info World Electric -- Info World's the website for Info World magazine, and a complete site it is. Articles, news stories, columns and reviews of both hardware and software. Come early, come often.

Interactive Age Digital has information from the current Information Age magazine as well as news updates in Interactive Age Daily.

MacworldWeb -- This pub takes information from Macworld Magazine and updates it with breaking news from the Mac community. Check this site often if you think PCs are better used as boat anchors.

PC Computing -- Here, you'll find a more consumer oriented approach to the PC. Check it out for free stuff.

PC Magazine -- This is Ziff Davis' answer to BYTE. It's strictly business and benchmarks.

PC Today -- Great for those of you who are viewing this at work and don't have a home computer. The site provides tips on how to get good deals on home PCs, which you'll need if the boss catches you browsing this site.

Technology Review -- The place to come and check out the future. It's MIT's magazine of technology and policy, and includes an archive.

Windows Sources -- If you don't know what this magazine is about, then you're in danger of radiation poisoning from too much exposure to your Mac monitor.

Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operations -- It isn't a magazine, or even a series of articles. It is a complete set of the software used by Ziff-Davis Labs when evaluating a new computer.


News Magazines


Time Magazine -- Here, Time readers can browse material from both the US and international editions, a Time Daily, as well as links to past issues and a guide to congressional voting records and e-mail adddesses.

U.S. News Online -- This news magazine features top stories from the print version, as well as its most popular features, such as: News Watch, News You Can Use, College Guide and Town Hall.

Politics Now is a joint production of Newsweek, The Washington Post and ABC-TV. It's updated frequently with breaking news on the year's Presidential and Congressional elections. It also promises real-time voting results on election night.

All Politics -- All Politics is the online rival of Politics Now. Produced by Time and CNN, this news source tracks the candidates and "plays" with democracy.

Christian Science Monitor -- While not technically a magazine -- the print version folds like a newspaper -- the Monitor provides the sort of insight and analysis that's associated with the best of news magazines.

The Nation -- While the digital edition doesn't have all that readers can find in the bull-dogging print version, the Nation features several "online forums" and their top stories.

Minnesota Newspapers

 

Independent -- Southwest Minnesota's daily newspaper published in Marshall Minnesota.

Grant County Herald -- Weekly news, frequently-updated community events, classifieds and a local yellow pages. Also: Local sports and links to national news and information.

The Sauk Centre Herald -- The sister paper of the Grant County Herald, the Sauk Centre paper also compiles weekly news, sports, events and weather from the local community. Also: This paper provides information about local churches.

Duluth News Tribune -- The Trib Universe is online and it looks a lot -- surprise! -- like the Pioneer Planet. Local news, sports, schools, links and a pay-by-the-story archive. However, it's a lot easier to navigate than the Planet, and it's got content you can't find anywhere else. Check out: Points North.

The New York Mills Herald -- News, a community connection and "lakesurfer info."

The Annandale Advocate -- Weekly news, sports and community events. Unique to the site: A local phone book full of area schools, businesses, churches and government agencies.

The Cannon Falls Beacon -- News, sports, classifieds and a community connection. Also: a local Yellow Pages.

Page 1 Publications -- This service brings viewers six northwestern-Minnesota newspapers, each with some news, cartoons, and a staff e-mail list. News from East Grand Forks, Karlstad, Greenbush, Middle River, Warroad and Williams.

Proctor Journal Online -- Proctor-area news, a community calendar, government and entertainment.

Tyler Tribute -- The newspaper from downtown Tyler, here you'll find news, sports and business news of the week. Also, a sneak peek at the next week's Tribute.

ECM Publishers -- This group has put several weekly newspapers online, each with the same combination of news, commentary and obituaries. The Anoka County Union, Mille Lacs County Times, Blaine-Spring Lake Park Life and Coon Rapids Herald all sport the same infrastructure.

Paynesville Press -- News, classifieds, a business directory and new to the site -- an internal search tool.

Morrison County Record -- This Little Falls-area newspaper includes a news, hometown chat area, classified ads, shopping and online coupons.

Howard Lake Herald and Winstead Lester Prairie Journal -- Top stories, cartoons, community events and a visitor's guide to the Winsted, Lester Prairie, Howard Lake and Waverly area. Now: Winter Contest and deer-hunting reports.

InfoNation -- A computer e-zine from Minneapolis, Minn. Don't expect a group of system administrators debating the future of hypertext mark-up language, though. A thoughtful look into the human and ethical issues facing the Net. Now: Holiday gift guide for geeks.

The Austin Herald -- Weekday news, sports, marketplace and opinion from southern Minnesota.

Lakeshore Weekly News -- A Minneapolis weekly with news, features and a community calendar. The newest addition: At the Library.

This Week -- This chain of weekly papers concentrates on Dakota County cities, the southern-most Twin Cities suburbs.

Insight News -- Weekly news, features and entertainment from Minnesota's first African-American news source. Unique to the site: the Insight/Proceed Black Business Directory.

The Brainerd Dispatch -- Updated daily with local news, entertainment and "personal connections." This online paper has a great and ever-expanding links section, which leads one to worry that their news staff spends all their time surfing. (Doh!)

The Lake Country Echo and Pine River Journal -- A smooth site that does just the right amount, not too much and not too little. Easy to manuever among a handful of local stories, upcoming events, classified advertising, and a string of local columnists. Also a plus -- a nice "page one" photo.

West Central Tribune -- This southwestern Minnesota news source hosts daily local news, local sports, local weather and local calendar updates. (Local, local, local.) A treat for any Twin Cities transplants. Low on graphics, so it's fast-moving.

The Minnesota Daily -- News from the University of Minnesota's students. Several "focus" sections on hot U of M topics.

The Mankato Free Press -- "The Week in Review" and "Take Two Movie Reviews" are the extent of local coverage. Also: Home Garden hints.

The Riverview Times, St. Paul - The Mississippi is a living resource and the "Riverview Times" tells its story with historical articles and photos and new reports on the fight to save the river. Now: in four languages.

Northfield News, The Northfield News Online is just that -- what's going on in the Northfield area.

St. Paul Pioneer Press -- A relative newcomer to the web, Pioneer Planet has much the same content as the daily Pioneer Press. Check out the "Technology" section which is updated on Mondays. It's filled with links to other Minnesota websites.

The City Pages, Twin Cities -- All the content of this Twin Cities' alternative news weekly, plus "Cool Stuff" not in the dead-tree version.

Star Tribune, Twin Cities -- The full paper, complete with a nifty weather section, launched this summer. Occasional additions to the print version, threaded discussion and special features.

Winona Daily News -- Top daily stories and recent feature articles are available online. Plenty of information about the town and region. New to the site: a WinonaNet search tool.

Other Newpapers

The Lincoln Journal-Star -- Need we say "Husker Mania?" The top three items on this homepage are all sports related. You'll find local news near the bottom. New: video clips from KMTV-3. (Lincoln, Nebraska)

The Sioux City Journal -- Daily news, online coupons, bible verses and links to external weather sites. Also, an "almanac," which showcases the week's births, arrests and traffic violations. New: Champs' Corner. (Sioux City, Iowa)

The Chicago Tribune -- The Tribune is nearly everything you would expect a major news source to be: frequently-updated, with news, sports and "pet" projects, literally. (Chicago, IL)

The Chicago Sun-Times -- The bright colors and happy faces might annoy some, but the Sun-Times reliable news, sports, business information, Roger Ebert's movie reviews and Don Crabb on computers. (Chicago, IL)

The Mail*Hub is in its development phase and only certain e-mail addresses are currently in the system. United States Government - Federal Information and Directories

The General Services Administration runs the telephone-based Federal Information Center. The telephone number to call from the Twin Cities is 1-800-688-9889 and 1-301-722-9000 from other parts of the state. Also available are answers on Federal Frequently Asked Subjects.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is a directory of Federal programs, projects, service and activities which provide assistance or benefits to the American Public. It contains financial and nonfinancial assistance programs administered by departments and establishments of the Federal government.
